My artwork titled "Fix your Face", draws inspiration from a common saying in the Black community that where Mothers instruct their children to "Fix their faces" when it appears as though they have an attitude or are upset to ensure a positive appearance despite of. The meaning of this piece is deeply rooted in my family background, growing up as a Black woman in a southern setting with strong religious influences, and being with family members who are teachers, administrators, pastors and bishops. This environment makes it challenging to be my authentic self without conforming to certain expectations. In my painting, my face is depicted being pulled down by an African American hand while a Caucasian hand is attempting to lift me up. My hair undergoes a transformation from my current locs hairstyle to my past hairstyle of straighten hair. Symbolizing a transition from my authentic self to a more conventional appearance. The piece reflects the experiences of making myself appear as something forcefully due to society and being told to "Fix my face" even when nothing is wrong with me personally.
